The Korean skincare routine, also known as K-beauty, is known for its focus on hydration, gentle care, and consistent daily skincare. While some Korean skincare routines include many products, you don’t need to follow a complicated 10-step routine to enjoy the benefits of this approach. Understanding the purpose of each step can help you create a routine that works for your skin type and individual concerns.
Step 1: Cleanse
Cleansing removes dirt, excess oil, makeup, sunscreen, and daily buildup from the skin. Korean skincare often emphasizes gentle cleansing to avoid unnecessarily drying the complexion.
In the evening, some people use a double-cleansing method, beginning with an oil-based cleanser to help remove makeup and sunscreen, followed by a water-based cleanser. This isn’t necessary for everyone, so choose an approach that works comfortably for your skin.
Step 2: Tone
A facial toner can provide lightweight hydration after cleansing and prepare the skin for the products that follow. Modern Korean toners are often designed to hydrate and soothe rather than simply remove leftover impurities.
Choose a gentle, alcohol-free formula if your skin is prone to dryness or sensitivity.
Step 3: Treat
This is where essences, serums, and ampoules can be incorporated. These products are typically more concentrated and can target specific concerns such as dryness, uneven-looking skin tone, or signs of aging.
You don’t need multiple treatments. Choose ingredients based on your individual skincare goals and introduce new products gradually.
Step 4: Moisturize
A Korean moisturizer helps hydrate the skin and support its natural moisture barrier. Creams, lotions, emulsions, and gel moisturizers can all be used depending on your skin type.
Dry skin may prefer a richer cream, while oily or combination skin may feel more comfortable with a lightweight formula.
Step 5: Protect With Sunscreen
In the morning, finish your routine with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Sun protection is an essential part of any skincare routine and helps protect the skin from UV exposure.
Reapply sunscreen as directed when spending extended time outdoors.
Do You Need Every Step?
No. Korean skincare is about thoughtful, consistent care—not using the largest number of products possible.
A simple routine of cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen can provide an excellent foundation. You can then add a toner, serum, or other treatment if your skin benefits from it.
At Simply Skincare, we believe skincare should work for you. Take inspiration from the Korean skincare philosophy, but build a routine around your own skin type, needs, and comfort.
